Manuel Durão was born in Lisbon in 1987 and completed courses in trumpet and percussion at the local conservatoire. He has a degree in Composition from the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa where he studied with Roberto Perez, Benoît Gibson, Sérgio Azevedo, João Madureira and Carlos Caires. He attended several Orchestral Conducting courses by Jean-Sébastien Béreau. He received a degree in Composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" Leipzig (Germany) where he studied with Reinhard Pfundt (composition), Helgeheide Schmidt (piano) Wolfgang Kluge, Barbara Rucha (conducting) and Michael Schorcht (Improvisation). In 2013 he concluded the Meisterklassenexamen (postgraduate) with the highest classification. He received scholarships of the Erasmus programme (2007) and the DAAD (2009/10 and 2010/11) and the prize of the latter institution for "exceptional performance of foreign students“.

His music theatre works have been played at Opera Leipzig, Hamburg State Opera and Podium Festival Essligen. In 2011 he was winner of the composition competition of the MDR (Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk | Central German Broadcasting). In 2013 he received the 3rd prize of the MDR competition on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Wagner and received the incentive award for young composers and musicologists from the Sächsischer Musikbund (Musical Union of Saxony). His interest in musical theatre led him to participate in a meeting of the European Network of Opera Academies, the Netzwerk Neues Musiktheater Rheinsberg and to the scholarship program "Akademie Musiktheater heute" of the Deutsche Bank Foundation Germany.

Manuel Durão lives in Leipzig where he works as a composer, conductor and teacher. 2017 he was appointed artistic assistant at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" teaching Composition techniques and ear training.
