Details as performer
Tiago Cutileiro – composer and sound artist – studied Classical Guitar (prof. Luís Robert) and Piano (prof. Raquel Correia) at the Music School of the Lagos Coral Group, as well as Piano (prof. Carla Seixas) and Composition (prof. António de Sousa Dias and prof. Jorge Peixinho) at the Music Conservatoire in Lisbon. He graduated from Composition (Licentiate Degree with prof. Amílcar Vasques-Dias) at the University of Évora, where he received two scholarships of merit. He participated in diverse composition masterclasses with Emmanuel Nunes, Salvatore Sciarrino, John Chowning, Leo Brouwer, Agostino di Scipio and Barry Truax, among other composers and sound artists. More recently, at the Berlin University of the Arts, he has also attended Computer Music and Audio-Visual Programming classes with Alberto de Campo and Frederik Olofsson.

Between 2001 and 2009 Tiago Cutileiro lectured Analysis and Composition Techniques at the Lagos Music Academy. He was also assistant professor at the University of Évora and he collaborated with the São Carlos National Theatre and Culturgest. In 2014 he did his PhD in Composition with Christopher Bochmann and Benoît Gibson as supervisors. The thesis concerned the non-narrativity in contemporary music and its relation with the traditionally narrative music genres. In this context he composed the ópera Tudo Nunca Sempre o Mesmo Diferente Nada (2014) for four singers, string quartet, clarinet quartet, electronics, field recordings and video.

Tiago Cutileiro’s work has been focused on the relation between the reality (tendentiously non-narrative) and the artificiality (tendentiously narrative) in music and in the arts. His work encompasses instrumental music (chamber and orchestral, with or without electronics), electroacoustic music, sonic and audiovisual installations, music for film and theatre; it has been performed above all in Portugal, but also in Spain, France and Germany.
