Antero Orlando Pereira Ávila was born in the Pico Island on June 24, 1973. His first contacts with musical notes were made with his uncle, Custódio Garcia, even before he learned how to read or to write. At the age of 7, he took private piano lessons with Josefina Canto e Castro. At the age of 14, he was the artistic director of the Filarmónica União Artista de S. Roque do Pico.

He went to the Lisbon National Conservatory, where he was a student of Jorge Peixinho and Álvaro Salazar. Then he went to the Lisbon Superior Music School and completed his Degree in Composition. He studied with Carlos Caires, Sérgio Azevedo, Christopher Bochmann, Eurico Carrapatoso and António de Sousa Dias, among others. As a student, he had the opportunity to listen to his works being played in Lisbon and Oporto.

He has returned to the Terceira Island, where he teaches Musical Analysis, Composition, and Acoustics at the Regional Conservatory of Angra do Heroísmo.

He has been a member of several ensembles as a tuba and electric bass player.

Presently, he works both as a teacher, and as composer, conductor and instrument player. In this sequence, he has written several works for Choir and Orchestra, Chamber Music and Symphonic Band.
