João Castro Pinto (Lisbon, 1977) began studying music at the age of 8, taking private piano lessons. At the beginning of the 1990s he dedicated himself to the guitar, this time in a self-taught way. He participated in several projects / independent rock bands, as well as performed some concerts in Lisbon.

João Castro Pinto began his activity as a composer, sound and intermedia artist in the second half of the 1990's. His artistic production encompasses the fields of soundscape composition / field recordings, live electronics (solo and with instrumentalists), and electroacoustic / acousmatic music.

Between 2002 and 2005 he was the artistic director / producer of Hertzoscópio - Experimental and Transdisciplinary Arts Festival. Despite having only two editions (2003 and 2004) and an extension (2005), Hertzoscópio contributed to the dissemination of the work of national and international consecrated artists, as well as emerging artists, in a logic of experimental and transdisciplinary encounter of various artistic expressions (music, intermedia, video art, installations).
The academic career of João Castro Pinto is reflected in his work, insofar as it indicates his artistic concerns / interests. He graduated in Philosophy from F.C.S.H. of the New University of Lisboa, and he is currently finishing his PhD studies in Science and Technology of the Arts (musical computer science - soundscape composition) at the Portuguese Catholic University, C.I.T.A.R. - Center for Research in Science and Technology of the Arts, where he currently is a researcher.
Between 2001 and 2016 he attended Miso Music Portugal's masterclasses, courses and conferences, on electroacoustic composition, with the following composers: Bernard Parmegiani, Trevor Wishart, Barry Truax, John Chowning, Simon Emmerson, Adrian Moore, Eduardo Reck Miranda, Annette Vande Gorne, Takayuki Rai, Morton Subotnick, François Bayle, Francis Dhomont, Bertrand Dubedout, Miguel Azguime, etc...

He received the 1999 Young Creators Award, the Ernesto de Sousa 2001 Fellowship (Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Luso-American Foundation for Development and Experimental Intermedia Foundation) and the international prize Pépinières Européennes Pour Jeunes Artistes 2002.

He has held various artistic residencies, including: Experimental Intermedia Foundation 2001 (NYC - USA) (with the A Sense of Flow Intermedia Project about Tejo River¹s Audiovisual Landscape), Fournos Center for Digital Art 2003 (Athens - Greece) (with the intermedia project Cont@mination - about the audiovisual landscape of Athens), Electronic Music Studios of Leeds Metropolitan University 2013 (where he composed the 8-channel piece Simulacra - on discrete movements and textures) and LEC - Electroacoustic Creation Laboratory 2013, of Miso Music Portugal, where he composed Pareidolia, or the dreamt gardens, also for 8 channels.

He participated as a speaker, having produced articles for the purpose, in the following conferences and symposia:
