Emanuel Frazão was born in Ponta Delgada in 1961. He started his musical studies in that city’s conservatory, where in 1978 he won the First Prize in the Dame Ruth Railton Piano Competition. In 1990 he won the First Piano Prize in the Portuguese Musical Youth Competition. He studied at the National Conservatory in Miguel Henriques’ piano class and graduated in Composition from Lisbon’s Higher School of Music with Constança Capdeville, Álvaro Salazar and Christopher Bochmann as teachers. He simultaneously took piano improvement classes with Dmitri Paperno and composition and electroacoustics classes at IRCAM. As a composer his pieces were presented in various concerts and festivals, such as the Gulbenkian Contemporary Music Meetings, the International Contemporary Art Meetings, the Mediterranean Europe Young Artists Biennial, ACARTE, São Roque Music and the Atlantic Music Festival. Emanuel Frazão is the president of the Portuguese Musical Youth and teaches Analysis and Orchestration at the National Orchestra Academy.
