José Carlos Almeida de Sousa was born in Viseu (Portugal), 1972. He began his studies in the music school Conservatório de Música Dr. Azeredo Perdigão where he finished the class of composition in 1995. In 1996 he went to the University of Aveiro to get a degree in composition, finishing it in 2000. In June 2005 he had his master degree from the Aveiro University with his thesis “The Timbre and its Metamorphoses in the Compositional Process of Electroacoustic Music." He studied composition and electronic music with Evgueni Zoudilkine, João Pedro Oliveira and Isabel Soveral. He made some classes with Jorge Antunes, Alain Sève, Tomás Henriques and Emmanuel Nunes. His electronic piece Apocalíptica was played in the 7th Festival of Electroacoustic Music “Primavera en La Habana 2000” – Cuba. He won a prize with his piece Viagem in the competition of Electroacoustic music “Música Viva 2001” and a honours prize in the same competition in 2000. In 2003 he made the orchestration of some José Afonso and José Mário Branco songs for a theatral piece called “The First Day”. This piece was represented in Coimbra – National Capital of Culture. José Carlos Almeida de Sousa teaches composition in Dr. José Azeredo Perdigão Conservatory of Music, in Viseu, where he is also the Pedagogical Director.
