Ivan Moody (b.1964) studied music and theology at the Universities of London, Joensuu and York, where he earned his doctorate. He studied composition with Brian Dennis, Sir John Tavener and William Brooks. His music has been performed and broadcast throughout the world, and recorded on such prestigious labels as Hyperion, ECM, Telarc, Warner Classics and Sony Classical. His most substantial works to date are the oratorio Passion and Resurrection (1992), recorded on Hyperion CDA 66999), the Akáthistos Hymn (1998), recorded by Cappella Romana on Gothic Records CD 49210 and The Dormition of the Virgin (2003), a BBC commission. Other important works include the piano concerto Linnunlaulu (2003), the double bass concerto The Morning Star (2003), Passione Popolare (2005), a commission from the Antidgoma Festival, Ravenna Sanctus (2006) commissioned by Chanticleer and recorded on Warner Classics R2 146364), Lacrime d’ambra (2006) for harp and ensemble (commissioned by the Grupo de Música Contemporânea de Lisboa, and recorded on La Mà de Guido LMG 2115), Stabat Mater (2008), for choir and string quartet, a commission from the Oslo International Festival of Church Music, and Moons and Suns (2008), written for Ars Nova Copenhagen and the Raschèr Saxophone Quartet. Commissions in recent years include Canti della Rosa (2008), for the King's Singers, the piano quintet Nocturne of Light (2009) for Paul Barnes and the Chiara Quartet, Birth of Leaves (2009) for bonang and ensemble, premiered by Elizabeth Davies and OrchestrUtopica in Lisbon in November 2009, Canticum Canticorum IV (2010) for Seattle Pro Musica, Sub tuum praesidium (2010) for the English Chamber Choir, and Simeron (2012), for Vox Luminis and the Goeyvaerts Trio, recorded in July 2013 for release on the Dutch label Challenge in March 2014. Works finished recently include Fioriture, for the pianist Paul Barnes, premiered in February 2014, and Qohelet, a large-scale work for the Italian ensemble De Labyrintho, which will be premiered and recorded in 2014. He is currently working on commissions for the flautist Monika Streitová, the BBC Singers, the Festival de Música de Alcobaça and the St Romanos Cappella. In October 2014 he will be Resident Artist at Biola University in California. As a conductor, he has worked regularly with various choirs and ensembles in Europe and the USA, including the Kastalsky Chamber Choir (London), Capilla Peña Florida (Spain), the choir of St George’s Cathedral, Novi Sad (Serbia), the Orthodox Chamber Choir of the University of Eastern Finland, Cappella Romana (USA), and the Odyssea Choir (Lisbon). Previously a researcher at CESEM – Universidade Nova, Lisbon, Ivan Moody is currently Professor of Church Music at the University of Eastern Finland. He is also a protopresbyter of the Orthodox Church (Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople) and Chairman of the International Society for Orthodox Church Music. As a musicologist he has published articles on aspects of sacred music, on the music of Serbia and Bulgaria, and on contemporary composers such as Górecki, Gubaidulina, Pärt, Schnittke and Tavener.
