Composers

Fátima Fonte studied composition at the ESMAE (Porto) and at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. In the course of the Master of Arts she has worked with the Nieuw Ensemble, who performed her pieces Sul and Lavava y suspirava at the Concertgebouw (Amsterdam) and at other Dutch concert halls.

As part of her interest in vocal music and different musical traditions, she went to India to study Hindustani Music with the singer Aparna Gurav, with a scholarship from the Oriente Foundation.

Icarus Ensemble performed her piece Floating in Italy and at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival 2012 (UK). A Bird in the Garden, composed for the Young Composers Meeting in Apeldoorn (Netherlands), was performed by orkest de ereprijs during the Gaudeaumus Music Week (2013).

In recent years she has been working intensively with stage music in Portugal. One of the main works – the opera buffa A Querela dos Grilos – has been presented at numerous Portuguese venues. In 2017-18 she was Young Associated Composer at the São Carlos National Theatre, participating in several collaborative workshops with instrumentalists, dancers, choreographers and singers, additionally to premiering Era uma vez eu-alface, for narrator and the Portuguese Symphony Orchestra. In 2019 the Gulbenkian Orchestra performed Breve Desassossego as part of the "Composing for Voices" workshop, and the Tágide Duo premiered the piece coração acordeão commissioned by the Miso Music Portugal.

Fátima Fonte is currently beginning a doctorate in Composition at Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London).
