Victor Coelho Macedo Pinto was born in Oporto in 1917. He stood out as composer, pianist and music critic. He was a piano disciple of Luís Costa, Vianna da Motta and Winfried Wolf and a composition disciple of Cláudio Carneyro and Fernando Lopes-Graça.
With a manifold personality and a solid cultural background, Victor Macedo Pinto was a lecturer at the conservatories of Coimbra, Braga and Porto, teaching the Higher Courses in Piano and Composition.
Diário de Notícias, Jornal de Notícias, O Primeiro de Janeiro, Seara Nova, Gazeta Musical and Arte Musical are among the periodicals for which Victor Macedo Pinto wrote.
Besides his career as a musician, Macedo Pinto graduated in Law from Coimbra University and was a magistrate for the Labour Court. He became a diplomat in 1948 and worked for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1957 he carried out his last diplomatic duties as a secretary of Portugal’s mission in Karachi (Pakistan).
Victor Macedo Pinto died in Oporto in 1964.
Containing a wide diversity of genres, his musical work is characterized by an essentially Portuguese lyric inspiration, displaying both national and cosmopolitan features. Particularly important is his piece Sete Canções Antigas (Seven Old Songs, 1950), written for voice, flute and piano, and also his Sonata para Violino e Piano (Piano and Violin Sonata), which reveals his musical eclecticism. Also worth mentioning is the piano piece Elegia a Luís Costa (Elegy for Luís Costa) and the music composed for the staging of Euripides’ Medea (flute, piano and percussion) and Sophocles’ Antigone (voice, flute, piano and percussion).
