António Victorino d’Almeida was born in Lisbon in 1940 and started his musical studies with Marina Dwander. He later studied piano with Fernando Leitão, composition with Artur Santos and Joly Braga Santos, and Music History with Maria Augusta Barbosa. He finished the Higher Course in Piano at the National Conservatory with an average grade of 19 (0-20 scale), which allowed him to get a scholarship from the Institute of Higher Culture in order to carry on his studies in Vienna. He there improved his technique as a concert performer with Wladislav Kedra and Dieter Weber. EXTERNAL LINKS António Victorino D'Almeida With Karl Schiske he dedicated himself to the study of composition and obtained the final Composition Course Diploma with the maximum grade possible, awarded with distinction and by unanimity. He therefore received an award from Austria’s Ministry of Culture for the best final year student. He later held a Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation scholarship to study contemporary music with the composer Friedrich Cehra, electronic music with Dieter Kaufman and orchestra conduction with Professor Koslik. Between 1974 and 1981 he was a cultural attaché in Vienna. He was also a member of the jury at the Vianna da Motta Competition (Lisbon) and at the Tchaikovsky Competition (Moscow). As an interpreter he participated in several concerts, both in Portugal and abroad, and has always been a regular presence in Portuguese media as the presenter of cultural programmes.
