Program Notes
Clepsidra, for string orchestra, was written in September 1998. At its first performance witch took place in Lisbon on November 1998, it was played by the Sinfonietta de Lisboa, conducted by Vasco Azevedo.
This piece establishes several sets of relationships between two aspects of the same basic material trough process of gradual transformation. Thus, developing from homophonic rhythmic regularity to irregular asynchronous polyphony, from irregular asynchronous polyphony to parallel movement, from slow stable textures to fast energetic melodic shapes and so on.
The static beat of a clockwork mechanism and the wildness of a troubled water stream, suggested the name Clepsidra (the ancient Greek water clock)
