JOÃO MADUREIRA "IN FOCUS" ON MIC.PT IN JULY
Discreetly expressive, secretly lyrical and suddenly full of energy and vigorous… João Madureira's music is neither traditional nor avant-garde, neither tonal nor atonal; it is a personal statement on the world's immense diversity. In July the mic.pt section “In Focus” will be dedicated to João Madureira, who this year celebrates his 40th anniversary. In the Portuguese contemporary music world the composer has a significant position. Apart from composition he is also active in the field of teaching at the Lisbon Superior School of Music and presides the Installation Committee of Archipelago (Arquipélago), Portuguese Composers Association. According to the composer, contemporary music environment in Portugal needs more union between the people involved. João Madureira considers contemporary creation an integral part of western music’s evolution. His language integrates various “ruptures” from the history of 20th century music by using techniques from different periods, contemporary (spectralism) and past. Another component essential in his artistic activity is the investigation of relations between music and text as emitters of signs, which create meanings. Discover the work and ideas of João Madureira, the mic.pt composer “In Focus” in July.

JORGE LIMA BARRETO (1949-2011)
Jorge Lima Barreto, an innovative and restless personality of Portuguese improvised and electroacoustic music, managed to achieve what many consider impossible. Known for his irreverence and nonconformity, in his professional activity he joined different worlds, which normally are dominated by separatist tendencies - musicology, journalism, musical practice, art, experimental and popular music. The most common track of his activities was, above all, that of radical contemporaneity. In his artistic path he was one of Portugal's predecessors of various musical grammars. Jorge Lima Barreto introduced new interpretative and compositional solutions and at the same time maintained up to date with the development of technology in music. "Despite belonging to a restricted musical circuit, his music, his presentations in the media and texts - sometimes controversial - together with the strong charisma, make him a personality recognizable outside the environment of musical practice." [1] Born in 1949, composer, performer (piano and other keyboard instruments), essayist, musicologist and journalist, in his childhood Jorge Lima Barreto was an autodidact in piano and organ performance. He studied at the Portuguese Musical Youth (Juventude Musical Portuguesa) simultaneously frequenting a course in Historical and Philosophical Science at the Faculty of Letters at the Porto University. He graduated from History of Art and in 2010 obtained his PhD degree in Communication Sciences - Communication and Culture at the Lisbon New University (Universidade Nova de Lisboa). His thesis was entitled "Estética da comunicação musical - a Improvisação" ("Aesthetics of Musical Communication - Improvisation").
