MIGUEL AZGUIME "IN FOCUS" ON MIC.PT IN JULY
This month the mic.pt In Focus section is dedicated to Miguel Azguime, composer, performer and poet, whose new multimedia opera “A Laugh to Cry” will be presented this summer and autumn in Lisbon (avant-première), Warsaw (world-premiere) and Sweden (tour). The beginnings of Miguel Azguime’s musical career are marked by his participation in various jazz and improvisation groups, as well as studying the recorder and percussion. In 1985 together with Paula Azguime he founded the Miso Ensemble, a flute and percussion duo with electronics. They have constructed a singular path on the panorama of Portuguese music, evidenced by the originality of the programmes presented in concert and by the diversity of the works created by and for the duo. The evolution of the Miso Ensemble’s language, from improvisation to composition and utilization of digital and audio-visual means of creation, coincided with Miguel Azguime’s affirmation as composer, and with the foundation of the cultural association Miso Music Portugal, which included in its structures the independent label Miso Records, the Miso Studio, the Música Viva Festival, as well as the Portuguese Music Research & Information Centre. Miguel Azguime’s compositional style distinguishes itself in a language of structural rigour on the one hand and formal freedom, on the other. His work is often situated on the crossroads between instrumental and electroacoustic writing, which in this composer find a fascinating complementarity. The relations between various activities exercised by Miguel Azguime, as composer, poet and performer gave origin to his interest in the domain, designated as “speech as music, music as speech”, in the search for a meaning and balance between words and music. In July visit the mic.pt In Focus section dedicated to Miguel Azguime.
