ângela da ponte in focus at mic.pt in february
This month the In Focus section presents the Questionnaire / Interview to Ângela da Ponte, young composer published by the MIC.PT, who this year celebrates her 30th anniversary.
She graduated from Composition at the ESMAE in Porto. Presently she is assistant Professor at the University of Birmingham, where she is also preparing her Doctorate under the guidance of Jonty Harrison and Michael Zev Gordon. Her recent projects include the collaboration with the tuba player Sérgio Carolino; composition of the song Espremendo a Laranja for the project 3'30'' Percussive Sung Songs with Nuno Aroso and Rita Redshoes; as well as the 21Khz project, which she cofounded together with Dimitris Andrikopoulos. This project is defined in a "mutual interest of the two composers / performers in exploring and experimenting with the expressive potential of concrete sounds and their manipulation with different media".
While composing a piece Ângela da Ponte undertakes a metaphoric or symbolic idea, based on a "narrative written before elaborating the sound world". As she also tells us in the Questionnaire / Interview: "…at this moment when art has less and less financial support it always arises with more strength, either in the form of protest or education (…). Therefore, there will be always a motivation for the practice of art in various fields. (…). In my opinion art is and will always be a human need…

In February visit the In Focus section with the Questionnaire / Interview to Ângela da Ponte, one of the young composers published by the MIC.PT.
