Portuguese 20th and 21st Century Music Notebooks
With the aim to promote the material contained, on the one hand, in the MIC.PT In Focus section since 2011, and on the other, in the series of digital editions – Dossiers . Portuguese Composers of the 20th and 21st (released in the beginning of 2015), the Portuguese Music Research & Information Centre – MIC.PT has edited and released a new series of bilingual, printed publications: Portuguese, 20th and 21st Century Music Notebooks.
In parallel with the edition of scores and other MIC.PT digital materials, through this new series of printed publications we intend to create a portrait of Portuguese contemporary composition and art music, thus promoting even more effectively and directly the activity of numerous Portuguese composers of the 20th and 21st centuries published by the MIC.PT. The series – Portuguese, 20th and 21st Century Music Notebooks – constitutes a renewed "visit" to the work of each composer, simultaneously being an incentive to explore and (re)discover both his or her music, as well as aesthetic, political and philosophical reflection.

Until now, the MIC.PT has published 10 Portuguese, 20th and 21st Century Music Notebooks; with five more in preparation for print during the next few months. For more information, visit the MIC.PT September In Focus section.

Activities of the composers published by the MIC.PT
New Scores on the MIC.PT

From now on the MIC.PT publishes on-line 10 new scores by three Por-tuguese contempo-rary composers: À PORTA DA MANHÃ – cânticos de Abril (2016) for Portuguese guitar and classical guitar (dedicated to the Raposo Duo) and SALMODIA – da noite e da montanha (2017) for soprano, saxophone, viola, cello and accordion (commissioned by the Síntese – Contemporary Music Group) by Cândido Lima; as well as the 8-piece cycle Metamorphosis and Resonances (2014-17) for different solo instruments by Hugo Vasco Reis – new composer published by the MIC.PT (please find more information below).
Fernando C. Lapa

Created in the con-text of 10th anniver-sary of the Contra-tempus Quartet, the work Variações a partir de um coração by Eduarda Freitas and Fernando C. Lapa – composer published by the MIC.PT – will be premiered on September 21 at the Casa das Artes in Porto. In this performance the sonority of the instruments, conventional for the execution of original songs, is substituted with a chamber ensemble: soprano, clarinet, cello and piano. “To put Portuguese traditional music in the centre of a project constitutes in itself a sign that one knows where it came from and from where it is. We aren’t moved by any kind of revivalism and longing for the past. It is rather the conviction that we see the world with the present eyes, from the perspective of this space and time” – says Fernando C. Lapa.
António Pinho Vargas

Composed in 2015 the Concerto for Violin and Orchestra by António Pinho Vargas is included in the concerts of the Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon directed by Pedro Amaral and with André Gaio Pereira (violin; Young Musician of 2017). The concerts will take place on September 21 at the Cine-Teatro Curvo Semedo in Montemor-o-Novo and on September 21 at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon (Young Musicians’ Festival 2018). The music by this composer published by the MIC.PT also makes part of the two performances at the Cantabile Festival in Lisbon – on September 24 at the Foyer of the São Carlos National Theatre (Três Fragmentos for clarinet solo; 1985-88) and on September 27 at the National Music Museum at the concert by the tutors from the Dakapp/Cantabile master classes.
Daniel Moreira

Beethoven quasi una fantasia, op. 27 n.º 2 is a new work by Daniel Moreira – composer published by the MIC.PT – which will be premiered by the Remix Ensemble conducted by Peter Rundel, on September 18 at the Casa da Música in Porto. This concert entitled Para lá da Fantasia (Beyond Fantasia) also includes the participation of Pedro Burmester (piano) and Jonathan Ayerst (piano), as well as the music by Julian Anderson, Johann Sebastian Bach, Ludwig van Beethoven and György Kurtág. Inspired in Beethoven, Daniel Moreira’s work constitutes a joint commission by the Casa da Música and Kölnmusik.
Christopher Bochmann

Talking of Jasmie (2018) for five percussionists is a new work by Christopher Boch-mann, which will be premiered by the students of the Music Department at the University of Minho, on September 28 at the Nogueira da Silva Museum in Braga. The piece has been commissioned to this composer published by the MIC.PT by the Confucius Institute at the University of Minho. “I feel very close to Bach's music: I identify myself absolutely with the idea that music is either an extension of life, or its expression” – says Christopher Bochmann in the interview given to the MIC.PT in June 2014.
Igor C. Silva

Blindspot Box (2018) for bass clarinet, electronics, video and lighting is a new work by Igor C. Silva, which will be premiered on Sep-tember 3 at the Space for Free Arts – Vapaan Taiteen Tila in Helsinki. This performance entitled My Island, Your Shore by Maija Anttila (bass clarinet and electronics) and Katri Antikainen (sound projection and electronics) also includes works by Roope Mäenpää, Hannu Pohjannoro, I-lly Cheng and improvised music; it will be also presented on September 4 at the theatre – Tampereen Ylioppilasteatteri in Tampere (Finland). Still this month, on September 8 at the Gaudeamus Muziekweek (the Netherlands), this composer published by the MIC.PT will lead a Reading Session with the Trash Panda Collective, where young composer will develop music sketches into a major composition.
Luís Antunes Pena

The work tracking noise #4 (2018) for three performers and electronics by Luís Antunes Pena will be premiered on September 19 at the Odeon Cinema in Cologne (Germany). This performance entitled Hand Werk mit Strom by the Hand Werk Ensemble, which also includes works by Andreas Eduardo Frank, Sam Pluta, Cathy Van Eck, Tobias Hagedorn, Simon Løffler and Sergej Maingardt, will be also presented on September 22 at the Transart Festival in Bolzano (Italy). Also this month, the music by this composer published by the MIC.PT will make part of two concerts at the Kunst-Station Sankt Peter (Cologne): on September 1 Thomas Piel (cello) will perform ...winterlich ruhende Erde... (2000) and on September 8, Florentin Ginot (double bass) will premiere Luís Antues Pena’s another new work.
João Pedro Oliveira

In July various works by João Pedro Oliveira were distin-guished in the con-text of events dedi-cated to electronic music and experimental film. The piece Towdah (2009) received the prize for best music performed at the Sonic Crossings Conference (Cyprus); and the works Petals and Neshamah (both from 2016 and available at the composer’s vimeo channel: www.vimeo.com/user6116411) were dis-tinguished at the Latitude Film Awards (the UK), res-pectively, with the Gold Award (Best Visual Effects) and the Silver Award (Best Experimental Short). Another work by this composer published by the MIC.PT, Storms (2018), will be premiered on September 12 at the MU.SA – Art Museum of Sintra. This initiative of the International Videoarts Festival, and the UNESCO International Day of Light, includes the simultaneous premiere of video-music works in 10 different countries. Additionally this month two João Pedro Oliveira’s works will be presented in the USA: on September 7 the piece Vox Sum Vitae (2011) by Daniel Pate (vibraphone) at the Further Complications Festival: Uptown Goes Brooklyn; and on September 29 Tesseract (2017) at the Kansas City Performing Media Festival.
Hugo Vasco Reis . New Composer Published
by the MIC.PT

This September Hugo Vasco Reis has joined the group of Composers Published by the MIC.PT, which presently includes 64 creators. Born in 1981 this composer, guitarist (Portuguese guitar) and engineer has in his catalogue works for orchestra, chamber, electroacoustic and solo music, including the cycle Metamorphosis and Resonances (2014-17), which now makes part of the Catalogue of Scores Published by the MIC.PT. “Metamorphosis and Resonances are eight pieces for solo instruments: piano, viola, flute, cello, bass clarinet, harp, accordion and guitar. The common idea to all of them reflects a dialogue of complicity and conflict, pleasure and anguish, between the horizon and the abyss, between metamorphosis and resonance” – explains Hugo Vasco Reis in the programme note.

Music by Portuguese Composers in Italy . Soundscape Marathon

Electroacoustic works by the three composers published by the MIC.PT – Le bruit d’une porte qui... (2004) by José Luís Ferreira; Souks (2018) by José Carlos Sousa; Fluxus, pas trop haut dans le ciel (2017) by Jaime Reis – are included in the Soundscape Marathon, which will be taking place on September 25 in Florence (Italy), and whose programme is also composed of works by Italian, Greek, French, Canadian and Argentine composers. The sound projection of the Portuguese works will be carried out by Jaime Reis. The main concept of this Marathon, organized in the framework of the The Soundscape We Live In project in collaboration between various entities – including the DME Festival (Portugal) – is the creation of a meeting point between various sonic cultures.

MIC.PT Highlights
In the 1st Person . New Cycle on the Música Hoje

Na 1.ª Pessoa (In the 1st Person) is a new cycle of programmes in the context of the radio broadcast Música Hoje (Music Today) – produced by the Miso Music Portugal and the Portuguese Music Research & Information Centre for the Portuguese National Radio Antena 2 – starting this month with three radio programmes dedicated to the two composers published by the MIC.PT: Constança Capdeville (on September 7 and 21) and Jorge Peixinho (on October 5). Through these two broadcasts it will be possible to get to know, at first hand, the historical interviews with these two composers, which Miguel Azguime – Música Hoje’s host – made and recorded in 1990 and 1992, respectively. Starting in September and during various months to come, conversations with composers in Portugal will compose the cycle Na 1.ª Pessoa – a platform for their communication with the audience. Every two weeks the composers will be talking to Pedro Boléo, to reveal us different aspects of their sonic universe: from the issues connected with the music aesthetics and compositional technique, through philosophical or even political reflections, up to more practical subjects regarding their everyday life. For each Música Hoje programme the invited guests will bring a selection of works important for their artistic growth.
This new cycle of radio broadcasts – every two weeks on Fridays, at 1h00 a.m. on the Antena 2 – is yet another opportunity to get to know better Portuguese composers, and the ones active in Portugal, as well as their music. Na 1.ª Pessoa is presented by Pedro Boléo, coordinated by Jakub Szczypa and has the technical assistance of André Hencleeday.
