Performers

Ensemble MPMP is a group of flexible instrumentation which, since 2012, has worked closely with musicologists and composers to both rediscover Portuguese past musical heritage and to develop contemporary repertoires. It has been featured in the Festival Prémio Jovens Músicos (at the Belém Cultural Centre in 2013, and at the Grande Auditório of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in 2015) and at the Festival Música em São Roque (2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019), having given the first modern performances of works by Marcos Portugal (1762-1830), João José Baldi (1770-1816), D. Pedro IV (1798-1834), Joaquim Casimiro Júnior (1808-1862), Francisco Norberto dos Santos Pinto (1815-1860), Francisco de Freitas Gazul (1842-1925), Augusto Machado (1845-1924). In March 2014, the Ensemble MPMP's piano four hands duet and string quartet travelled to Brazil as part of the 'Música portuguesa em viagem' ('Portuguese Music Abroad') tour, supported by the Portuguese Government. In 2015, it produced the operas O cavaleiro das mãos irresistíveis (The Knight with the Irresistible Hands) and Cai uma rosa… (A Rose Falls…) by Rui Coelho (1889-1986) and Daniel Moreira (1983-) respectively, at the Municipal Theatres of Almada and Oporto. Its collaboration with the Lisbon Contemporary Music Group coincided with the release of the 8th issue of Glosas magazine, and gave rise to the "Latitudes" project which had as its main goal the performance of works by living Portuguese artists from different origins, backgrounds, places and schools, and "Música Portátil" ('Portable Music'), including chamber works of distinct periods as well as new music written by young composers. With the special participation of pianist Ana Telles, it presented the launch concert for a CD (Mosaic, ed. MPMP) wholly dedicated to works by João Pedro Oliveira (1959-). The group has already been recorded for CD in several occasions: O violino d’Orpheu (Orpheus’s violin – 2016), presenting chamber music of Ruy Coelho for the first time; Divertissement (2018), project dedicated to Fernando Lopes-Graça's wind trio and quintets; In illo tempore (2018), featuring string quartet and string orchestra works by Eurico Carrapatoso (1962-); poemas sem nome (2019), recording the result of the first edition of Prémio Musa, a composition award powered by MPMP. Ensemble MPMP has also contributed with the music for the animation film Macabre, released in 2018, with music of Filipe Lopes (1981-). It has recently been released its concert in the festival Dias da Música (Centro Cultural de Belém, Lisboa, 2017), with the Requiem to the memory of Camões, by João Domingos Bomtempo (1775-1842), that was broadcasted by Portuguese national television RTP. Ensemble MPMP has the artistic direction of Jan Wierzba since its foundation.
