Composer, multimedia artist and researcher from Braga, where he studied Jazz and Classical Piano, completing the Piano course at the Calouste Gulbenkian Conservatory. He holds a Degree in Composition from the ESMAE-IPP (Porto), where he studied with Virgílio Melo, Cândido Lima, Filipe Pires and Carlos Guedes. In 2009 he completed a Master’s degree in Multimedia at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto, and in 2018 a PhD in Digital Media at UT Austin/ Portugal within a research area in automatic music generation.
Rui Dias is a lecturer at the School of Applied Arts of the Polytechnic Institute of Castelo Branco (ESART-IPCB), where he teaches and coordinates the degree in Electronic Music and Music Production and the master’s degree in Digital Media Production.
He was a researcher in the Sound and Music Computing (SMC) group at the INESC-TEC Porto between 2010 and 2018 and he is currently a researcher at the Techn&Art research center at the Polytechnic Institute of Tomar. He has been a member of the Atelier de Composição Association (Porto) since 2001 and of Sonoscopia Associação Cultural (Porto) since 2013.
He regularly presents artistic work as a composer, performer and programmer, focusing on the creation of interactive musical and multimedia systems, electronic and electroacoustic music, music for dance and theater, and improvisation. Regarding the events and concerts, he has participated in the Música Viva Festival (Lisbon), Synthèse Festival (Bourges, France), Electroacoustic Music Days, Unicer Laboratório Criativo, Tom de Vídeo Festival (Tondela), Future Places Festival (Porto), Guimarães 2012 European Capital of Culture, Manobras in Porto, Suoni Inauditi (Livorno, Italy), North Door (Austin, TX, USA), Sonoscopia (Porto), Janeiro dos Grandes Espetáculos (Recife, Brazil), Serralves em Festa (Porto), Noite Branca (Braga), CARA Ano Zero (Matosinhos); Semibreve Festival (Braga), Som Riscado (Loulé).
