He learned music since childhood with his mother, who taught him piano and harp, while his father was a master of the cello. Later he studied harmony with Santos Pinto. At just 14 years old directed the amateur orchestra of the "Assembléa Philharmonica" and a year later entered as second cello in the orchestra of the S. Carlos, a post he held up until 1860 when he was raised to master cello.
His first foray into composition is 1850, making the comic opera "The Devil's Cistern”.
In 1853 he moved to Paris and became a member of the orchestra of the "Grand Opera", and also performed solo. Returned to Lisbon the following year. In 1863 was appointed director of the school of music at the Conservatory, where he was already on the professor of cello and bass since 1861.
