Portuguese pianist, improviser and composer Joana Sá works in new music and contemporary music. Studied in Lisbon, Paris, Castelo Branco and earned her degree in piano with teachers Caio Pagano and Paulo Álvares. Recently she received an INOV-ART grant for developing several projects under programme ‘Contemporary Instrumental Techniques Applied to Performative Improvisation’ in HfMT Cologne and had an honorable mention by Grant Ernesto de Sousa. She has played in various international festivals and venues such as: Festival Música Viva (PT), Forum Neue Musik (DE), Ring Ring Festival (SER), Festival Jazz Cerkno (SL), CCB, Casa da Música, Culturgest (PT), Kunst Station Sankt Peter, Studium MusikFabrik (DE). She is member of groups ‘POWERTRIO’ (piano, harp, guitar & electronics) ‘Máquina Lírica’ (piano, drums & electronics) and has a BIGINT lasting collaboration with artist Rita Sá. From this collaboration there were, among others, exhibitions in ‘Siggraph Asia’ (Yokohama), ‘255 Canal’ and ‘Gallery of Visual Arts’ (New York).
As music coordinator for CENTA – Centro de Estudos de Novas Tendências Artísticas - a pioneering pluridisciplinary centre for artistic residencies in Portugal, developed (2007/08) projects with the local community of Salgueiral (‘Sons do Salgueiral’ and ‘Concertos Improváveis...’, music workshops (‘Os sons que nascem...’) collaborated with ‘r(e)xistir’, project with the prisoners of Castelo Branco's Penal Institution and coordinated music residencies, seminars, concerts and other presentations.
She is recently collaborating with artist Pedro Diniz Reis and together they are developing the project ‘6489 AA for prepared piano’ related with ‘The book of AA’ by the same author (Culturgest).
She recorded for radios ‘Deutschland Funk’ and ‘ Antena 2’ and has works edited by labels ‘Creative Sources’ and ‘Centa’. Her first solo work ‘through this looking glass’ was filmed by Daniel Neves and is released in DVD+CD by German label ‘blinker – Marke für Rezentes’ in April 2011.
