Daniel Davis was born in Porto in 1990.
He studied Composition at the ESML - Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa (Music College of Lisbon) with the composers: Professor Dr
Sérgio Azevedo, Professor Dr
António Pinho Vargas and Professor Dr
Luís Tinoco. Still, during his studies at the ESML, he worked with the composers: Professor Roberto Alejandro Peréz, Professor Dr
Carlos Marecos, Professor Dr
João Madureira, Professor Dr
José Luís Ferreira and Professor Dr
Carlos Caires (Orchestration, Harmony, Music Analysis and Electroacoustic Music). In 2016 he finished his Master's Degree at the ESML and was invited for the Composition and Research Departments at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, in London, to realize a Doctoral Program with the composers: Professor Dr Julian Philips and Professor Dr Richard Baker. His studies are supported by the Research Department of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. He has also had the opportunity to work with the composer: Professor Dr Julian Anderson.
In 2013 Daniel Davis was distinguished at the Antena 2/SPA Competition - 2
nd Edition. In the same year he was awarded at the Portuguese Symphonic Wind Band (BSP) Competition - 2
nd Edition. In 2014 he won the Antena 2/SPA Competition - 3
rd Edition. In this context his work -
...from the last breath (2014) - was premiered by the
Gulbenkian Orchestra conducted by
Pedro Carneiro, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Music Hall. Still in 2015 he was nominated for the Best Portuguese Classical Music Work in the framework of the Portuguese Authors' Society Award. In 2016 Daniel Davis was awarded with the Silver Medal by the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon for having stood out as a composer at a national and international level.
As a composer, on the one hand, Daniel Davis has realized various projects in Portugal, as for example the Musical Theatre
Baú da Descoberta having as partners the ESML, Castelo São Jorge in Lisbon and the EGEAC (2015); or the participation in the Musicalmente project, where he created a
Concert for Babies (2016). Also in 2014-15 he was the Young Resident Composer of the Cascais and Oeiras Chamber Orchestra. On the other hand, his music has been performed at some emblematic, national and international music halls, as for example Suggia Music Hall at the Casa da Música in Porto, Vianna da Motta Music Hall (ESML), Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation Music Hall in Lisbon, Milton Court Music Hall in London, Atis Mons Concert Hall in France, and many others.
