Details as performer
Luís Neto da Costa is a Portuguese composer. His works cover solo instruments, chamber groups and orchestras, often incorporating electronics in recent years. With a keen interest in expanding his instrumental vocabulary, he has explored new extended techniques, such as the “muffled sounds” for clarinet, dozens of catalogued multiphonics for baritone saxophone, as well as the unique sound qualities produced by the body of the violin. He is currently focused on developing techniques based on the harmonic series, the main topic of his PhD at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, where he is supervised by Dimitri Papageorgiou, Franck Bedrossian (KUG-Graz) and Emilios Cambouropoulos. He is the holder of a studentship from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology.

He has received commissions from institutions such as Casa da Música, Festival DME, the Portuguese Composers Association, Arte no Tempo and Antena 2. In 2017, he was resident artist at Casa da Música, which led to the creation of three works premiered by the Remix Ensemble, conducted by Peter Rundel, the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, conducted by Baldur Brönnimann, and the Artium Trio. In 2023, he had an artistic residency at Lisboa Incomum. His compositions have been performed in concert halls across the country and in cities such as Madrid, Valencia, Milan, Bordeaux, Larissa, Monterrey and Rio de Janeiro.

Neto da Costa has won nine composition prizes. These include the Francisco de Lacerda Composer Prize from the Millennium bcp Foundation, in which the winning work was premiered by the Lisbon Metropolitan Orchestra, the Ibermúsicas Prize for Composition and Premiere of a Work 2021, and Category B of the International Prize for Composition for the Organs of the National Palace of Mafra in 2021.

The composer has collaborated with musicians such as Henrique Portovedo, Dejana Sekulić, Frederic Cardoso, Batista Júnior and Clara Saleiro. The results have been presented at international conferences and magazines, and some works have been included on the albums LUX ET UMBRA and Mixed Dialogues. The collaboration between Neto da Costa and the ars ad hoc group was documented by Arte no Tempo.

Neto da Costa has taken part in masterclasses with his supervisors and other composers such as Pierluigi Billone, Luis Naón, Clemens Gadenstätter and Nicolas Tzortis at events such as OutHear New Music Week in Greece, with the Klangforum Wien, and IlSUONO Contemporary Music Week in Italy. He also took part in seminars with Luca Francesconi and Unsuk Chin, and had a lesson with Sir Harrison Birtwistle.

Dedicated to the dissemination of new music, Neto da Costa has also taken on the role of conductor in various recitals by young composers and in the recording of a CD with the ESMAE Contemporary Music Ensemble. In 2021 he took part in the International Conducting Masterclass directed by Peter Rundel, conducting the Remix Ensemble with Marianne Pousseur.

Neto da Costa graduated in Composition from the School of Music and Performing Arts (ESMAE). He holds a Master’s degree in Music Teaching from the University of Aveiro and, in recent years, has taught Analysis and Composition Techniques.
