João Filipe Martins Ferreira initiated his musical and piano studies at the Regional Conservatoire in Castelo Branco. He graduated from Musical Education at the Superior School of Applied Arts (ESART) in Castelo Branco and Music Composition at the Superior School of Music and Performing Arts (ESMAE) in Porto. He did the Master's Degree in Composition and Music Theory under the guidance of Eugénio Amorim and Dimitris Andrikopoulos, as well as the Master's Degree in Musical Education at the School of Arts of the Portuguese Catholic University (Porto), and the Licentiate in Musical Formation at the Superior School of Applied Arts (ESART) in Castelo Branco.
João F. Ferreira has taken part in Master Classes with Jonathan Harvey, Kaija Saariaho, Marko Ciciliani, Pascal Dusapin, among others. In 2012 he participated in the 16
th Annual Percussion Workshop – Trstěnice Symposium (International Courses for Composers and Percussion Players) in the Czech Republic with Jeff Beer, Tomáš Ondrůšek and Ivo Medek. In the same year he was admitted to the ENOA Project (European Network of Opera Academies) at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation (Lisbon). There he worked with Luca Francesconi, having premiered his work
Wolf_Gang.
His work
Dominó for orchestra was premiered by the ESMAE Symphony Orchestra, having also been presented at an open score reading session by the Porto Symphony Orchestra Casa da Música;
Unwanted for voice and ensemble was premiered by
Lisbon Contemporary Music Group (GMCL), while
Hunga Mate for ensemble, didgeridoo, four voices, tape and live electronics was premiered by the Ensemble I&D at the Helena Sá e Costa Theatre in Porto.
