Miguel Resende Bastos is a young composer of contemporary classical music from Porto, Portugal, currently based in Germany. His main influences are the art movements and composers from the twentieth and twenty first centuries, as well as his teachers: the composers Dimitris Andrikopoulos, Ivo Medek, René Uijlenhoet and Robin de Raaff, with whom he studied in Porto, Brno, and Rotterdam. He’s also had the opportunity to meet and learn from world-renowned composers such as Unsuk Chin, Helmut Lachenmann, Frederic Rzewski, Trevor Wishart and George Benjamin.
He was twice awarded for his works exploring the relationship between music and literature, having composed for orchestra, chamber music, spoken text, opera and electronic music, as well as music for dance. His works have been premiered and performed in theatres and concert halls in Portugal, Germany and the Netherlands.
For the 2020-21 season, he is Composer in Residence with MPMP, an organization based in Lisbon, dedicated to the curation and promotion of Portuguese music.

Biography
Born in the city of Porto, Portugal, in April 1995, Miguel Resende Bastos started studying music at four years of age. He received Basic education in Piano and studied Flute for eight years. When he was 16, he started learning Analysis and Composition Techniques from with the Portuguese composer Daniel Moreira. It was in these classes that Miguel decided that he wanted to become a composer. Three years later, he started his Bachelor studies in Composition at ESMAE|IPP (Superior School for Music and Performing Arts, in Porto) where he studied Composition with Dimitris Andrikopoulos. Here he also studied orchestration, conducting and electronic music with composers such as Daniel Moreira, Carlos Guedes, Carlos Azevedo, Rui Penha and Eugénio Amorim. He also had private lessons in conducting with conductor Artur Pinho Maria. During this period, he had the opportunity to meet and attend seminars, workshops and conferences, with composers such as Cândido Lima, Luca Francesconi, Unsuk Chin, Helmut Lachenmann, Nicolas Bacri, and Vic Hoyland.
As part of the ERASMUS+ program, Miguel studied for a year at the Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno, Czech Republic, where he studied Composition with Ivo Medek. There he also studied Interactive Electronic Music with Jan Kavan, and Choral and Orchestral Conducting with Gabriel Rovňák. During this period, he met and had seminars with composers such as Frederic Rzewski, Martijn Padding, Kees Tazelaar, and Krzysztof Knittel.
He took part in the 2016-17 edition of the Tenso Young Composers Workshop, led by the composers James Wood and Leo Samama. In 2017 his piece À toa won 1 st prize at the 10 th International Composition Competition of Póvoa de Varzim. In 2018 he studied Orchestral Conducting with Jean-Sébastien Béreau.
In 2019, Miguel obtained his Master’s Degree in composition from the Codarts – University of the Arts in Rotterdam, where he studied with the composers René Uijlenhoet and Robin de Raaff. While living in the Netherlands he also had the opportunity to study with and learn from the composers such as Peter-Jan Wagemans, Klaas de Vries, George Benjamin and Trevor Wishart. This year also marked the premiere of his first opera at the festival New Beginnings, at the Maas Theater en Dans, in Rotterdam.
In 2020, in the framework of the Musa Prize promoted by theb MPMP – Patrimonial Movement for Portuguese Music, the jury composed by the composers Andreia Pinto-Correia and Januíbe Tejera and the conductor Jan Wierzba, awarded his piece Um Adeus aos Deuses.
Miguel has a special interest in cinema and sings at the Coral de Letras da Universidade do Porto, a Portuguese choir led by José Luís Borges Coelho.
