AMÍLCAR VASQUES DIAS IN FOCUS ON MIC.PT IN NOVEMBER
This year Amílcar Vasques Dias celebrates his 70th anniversary and since September is a new Portuguese composer published by the MIC.PT. These are reasons to dedicate this month the In Focus section to his work "presenting a tendency to reduce the musical material, used up to the most simple, thus obtaining the largest dramatic and sound effect, and also reflecting the influence of improvisation techniques close to jazz" (Teresa Cascudo, 2001).
Amílcar Vasques Dias was born in 1945. During 14 years he developed his activity in the Netherlands, including the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. His production encompasses instrumental and vocal chamber music, electroacoustic music, symphony orchestra, brass ensemble, a cappella and accompanied choir, multimedia works, as well as music for film and theatre. He has received commissions from various public and private institutions from the Netherlands and Portugal. In parallel to his activity as a composer, he presently develops fusion projects joining "classical" piano with folk music, the Alentejo chant and flamenco, being also dedicated to the recreation of José Afonso's music. Since his comeback to Portugal, Amílcar Vasques Dias has been professor at the Superior Music School in Lisbon and Porto, the University of Aveiro and Évora, having also been artistic director of the 20th Century Music Meetings in Alentejo.
The influence of Alentejo culture in his music is evident in a major part of his works composed since the 1990s. Entre Cante e Piano (Between Chanting and Piano) and Em Cante (In Chant) are the two projects connected with Alentejo folk music, where Amílcar Vasques Dias participates as performer and improviser; the next performance of Em Cante (Amílcar Vasques Dias, solo piano) will take place on November 6 at the Eborae Mvsica Conservatory in Évora
. "His erudition (...) astonishes with the solidity, where the chant doesn't loose its essence whilst facing the dissonant chords. It is as if the foundations of the tradition were so deeply rooted that its heart proves to be tenacious before any kind of more jazzy provocation (...)" (Gonçalo Frota, Público, October 2013).

Rui Penha's Work at the MNAC - Chiado Museum
Rui Penha, composer published by the MIC.PT, is one of the finalists at the first edition of the biannual Sonae Media Art Award, whose objective is to assert itself as an incentive to the Portuguese artistic creation in the field of multimedia. Five finalists have been selected for the Award's 2015 edition and their new, unedited works correspond to the elevated aesthetic and technical criterion, as well as to a diversity of multimedia languages that constitute the philosophy of the Sonae Award. The five works, including the creation by Rui Penha, Resono, will be presented at the MNAC - Chiado Museum in Lisbon between November 21 and January 31, 2016; the finalist will be announced in December. Rui Penha has created an installation reflecting on the communicational mediation of the machines and its influence on the contemporary processes of creating relations. The installation wil interact with the visitors through 15 sound receptors, Helmholtz resonatros, a scientific instrument, which gave origin to timbre analysis.
António de Sousa Dias AT O'culto da Ajuda
During November O'culto da Ajuda will receive the residency of the MUTABILIS project - installation and performance in preparation - resulting from a collaboration between Paula Pinto, Rita Casaes and António de Sousa Dias, composer published by the MIC.PT. The project is constructed as a hybrid artistic object. The title makes reference to the Hibiscus Mutabilis bush, whose flower is also known as confederate rose. These hermaphrodite flowers open purely white in the morning, and change during the same day, becoming pinkish, then intensively pink, and end up being violaceous in the subsequent days. The artists intend to create a behavioral work with its own development, rather than reacting or interacting with the audience. The installation is to provide a broader sensorial experience, incorporating a range of everyday and organic materials, suggesting interlaced wires, and also perhaps insinuating a "cocoon" of translucent canvas and video, where the performance creates an immersive experience.
Behind the Sound and the Image
The new cycle, Behind the Sound and the Image, revolving around music in cinema to rediscover various films from the classic, experimental, Portuguese and international cinematography, will be taking place at O'culto da Ajuda in Lisbon on November 13, 14, 26 and 27. Trying to trace a line of development of music in cinema, we will approach some of the theoretical writings on this subject, by Theodor W. Adorno, Hanns Eisler and Royal S. Brown. The sessions on November 14 and 26 will include the participation of two composers published by the MIC.PT, respectively: António de Sousa Dias, who will present the music and sound in the cinema of António de Macedo, as well as his own creation in this framework (for example in collaboration with Susana de Sousa Dias); as well as Filipe Lopes who will accompany Jerónimo Ribeiro Rocha and João Miguel Real in the presentation of their most recent animation, Macabre, which, as the creators reveal, is inspired in Alfred Hitchcock's Vertigo. The other sessions of the cycle, Behind the Sound and the Image, include the participation of Pedro Boléo (November 13) and Jelena Novak (November 27).
João Pedro Oliveira'S Music Around the WorlD
In September, the electroacoustic fresco 'Aphâr (2007) by João Pedro Oliveira, composer published by the MIC.PT, was distinguished with the award for soundtrack and sound design at the Hollywood Moving Pictures Film Festival, event which aims at promoting short films, features as well as television and multimedia productions, thus giving recognition to various artists around the world. This CD is released by the Clean Feed in collaboration with Shhpuma. Apart from Constança Capdeville's work adapted by the Powertrio it also includes three completely new compositions/improvisations by these musicians. Their work results from a "residency within a residency", from a creative lab, in other words, a long period of sharing not only music but also the daily life. The CD Di Lontan will be officially released on November 4 at 10h00 p.m., at the Maria Matos Theatre in Lisbon.
Work By Enrique X. Macíasin Galicia
Clamores y alegorías (1995) is the work by Enrique X. The programme of this concert also included pieces by Anton Webern and Arnold Schönberg. It was on November 4 1995 that Enrique X. Macía's death surprised the music universe; it was when he actually finished the composition of Clamores y alegorías, a commission of the Canarias Festival 1996. Thanks to Miguel Azguime's involvement in the organization of the work's materials, its world premiere became part of the Festival's programme, where it was performed by the Gran Canaria Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Adrian Leaper.
