JOÃO MADUREIRA IN FOCUS ON THE MIC.PT IN MARCH
This March the In Focus section is dedicated to João Madureira, composer published by the MIC.PT, whose music constitutes a personal statement on the world’s plurality.
João Madureira was born in Lisbon in 1971. After studying Composition at the Superior School of Music in Lisbon, he worked with Franco Donatoni in Siena, York Höller in Cologne and Ivan Fedele in Strasbourg. In 2007 the Aveiro University recognized his Composition studies in Germany with a Master’s Degree. This year the composer will defend his doctoral thesis, which, through the investigation of Luciano Berio’s work, deals with the relations between music, politics, ethics and philosophy.
João Madureira’s work includes compositions for chamber ensembles, symphonic orchestra, solo instruments with and without electronics, vocal and staged music, as well as music for theatre. In his language he integrates the various “ruptures” from the history of music, making use of the techniques and aesthetics both from the 20th century, such as serialism and spectralism, as well as from the past. Connected with the aesthetic principles of late postmodernism, João Madureira created within Portuguese music a singular voice. It isn’t only drawing from the various sources, such as ancient music, Central-African culture and non-musical phenomenon, which interest him. These sources let him include in music different metalinguistic dimensions.
How did João Madureira discover composition? How for him politics reveals itself in music and what is his opinion on the present situation of Portuguese music? You’ll find answers to these and other questions in the interview carried out by the MIC.PT in October 2016 and available now in our In Focus section. This interview will be part of João Madureira’s Dossier, to be published in April within the series - Dossiers . Portuguese Composers go the 20th and 21st Centuries.
