The piece Divertimento (2017), for solo viola, composed by Ângela da Ponte, appears on the new album FIFTY – fifty by violist Trevor McTait, released in May, which features works by six composers published by MIC.PT. Another work, entitled Metamorfoses necessárias para a reconquista do mundo, which this MIC.PT–published composer wrote in 2024 for soprano and ensemble, will be performed by Síntese – Contemporary Music Group, conducted by Diogo Costa, on June 12 at the Municipal Theatre in Guarda. Based on the poem of the same name by Natália Correia, the work by Ângela da Ponte was commissioned by Síntese for the Revolution project. At the performance in Guarda, the ensemble will present works from its 20-year history, highlighting those which, through their creative concept, reveal the revolutionary and transformative power of music, and of life, in a world in constant metamorphosis. ‘Art seems to have no immediate importance, as it deals with abstract aspects’, stated Ângela da Ponte in the interview she gave to MIC.PT in 2024, adding that, nevertheless, ‘it is true that we find in art what we often cannot find directly in life — freedom.’

The percussion quartet version of the work Dissolves me into geometrics (2025–2026), by composer António Pinho Vargas (published by MIC.PT), will be premiered as part of the concerts that Clamat – colectivo variável will give during their tour in Brazil and Argentina, which will take place in the second half of June. During this tour, which will visit cities such as Belo Horizonte, São João del-Rei, Campinas and São Paulo in Brazil, and General Roca in Argentina, the Clamat collective, under the artistic direction of percussionist Nuno Aroso and featuring Afonso Primo, Lourenço Oliveira and Pedro Leitão, will also perform works by Álvaro Salazar, Inés Badalo, Luís Antunes Pena and Pedro Berardinelli. Earlier this month, more specifically on June 6, the Nahia Trio — comprising Rita Lopes (clarinet), Catarina Mason (cello) and Alaitz Artola (piano) — will perform António Pinho Vargas’s work, Quatro ou cinco movimentos fugidos da água (2001). This concert is part of the 2026 Young Chamber Music Season, an initiative by Miso Music Portugal and the Portuguese Association of Friends of Music, which will take place at O’culto da Ajuda in Lisbon during the first half of June.

In June, three works by the composer Carlos Brito Dias (published by MIC.PT) will be performed in Hong Kong and Braga (Portugal). The first work, cuevas (2025), for string quartet, will be performed by the Asiartic Camerata at a concert taking place at the Fringe Club in Hong Kong on the 14th. At the end of the month, on June 27, the soloists of the Braga Sinfonietta will premiere the work hope (ii) (2026), for string quartet and electronics, as part of the radiografia #8 concert at gnration in Braga. Like several other pieces by Carlos Brito Dias, this one also arises ‘from an almost autobiographical context, an inner search for hope’. As the programme notes reveal: ‘hope (ii) is an attempt at reconciliation between the critical lucidity that the world may not improve and the desire to believe’. Finally, on the 28th, in Nogueira (Braga), the premiere of concerto grosso (2026), for string orchestra and traditional folk group, will take place as part of a collaboration between the Braga Sinfonietta and the São João Baptista de Nogueira Folk Group.

On June 9, the programme Sociedade Civil will be broadcast on RTP 2, featuring the composer Carlos Alberto Augusto (published by MIC.PT). In this episode, which addresses the topic of noise, the composer will discuss various aspects related to hearing, music and the nature of sound, as well as the importance of music education and hearing in the treatment and prevention of noise-related issues. In addition to being a composer, Carlos Alberto Augusto also works as a specialist in acoustic communication. He was head of the noise control department at the Environmental Studies Service of the Secretary of State for the Environment and is a member of the Portuguese Standards Commission, Acoustics Group (CT-28). Presented by journalist Luís Castro, the programme Sociedade Civil has a long history and aims to be part of the daily lives of everyone living in Portugal. It features debates on public issues by leading figures and presents specific topics in a transparent manner.

Three works by Cândido Lima (a composer published by MIC.PT), will be presented as part of another Listening Club event on June 6 at the MUZEU venue in Braga. These include Oceanos (1978–1979), Autómatos da Areia (1978–1984) and Lendas de Neptuno (1987), which were originally released by PortugalSom and reissued on vinyl by Grama in 2016. Curated by Matéria-Prima, the Listening Club ‘proposes a programme dedicated to the expanded concept of freedom, explored through sound practices that challenge formal, contextual and ideological boundaries, conceiving music as a space for experimentation and resistance.’ In this context, this album marked a shift in the way classical music is listened to in Portugal, opening doors to new aesthetics and creating a conceptual and sonic space unprecedented in the field of contemporary Portuguese music. The works of Cândido Lima seek new forms of musical experience, drawing on sensory and meditative practices, and exploring the sound flow, resonance, silence and the spatialisation of sound.

The release of the album entitled Outras Flores de Música, by Cláudio de Pina, an organist and a composer, will be held on June 5 at O’culto da Ajuda in Lisbon. This new album brings together 21st-century Portuguese contemporary music for an 18th-century Portuguese historical organ, by the four composers published by MIC.PT: Bruno Gabirro, Cláudio de Pina, Diogo Alvim and Vítor Rua. Each of the works represents a topological study utilising: score, graphic score, verbal score, soundscape, electronics and electroacoustics. With performance, production, recording, editing, mastering and artistic direction by Cláudio de Pina, the album Outras Flores de Música is released by Miso Records. As part of the release, two works created by Cláudio de Pina in 2024 and 2023, Tento de Falsas and Quasi-Lontano, will be presented, with the sound diffusion provided by the Miso Music Portugal Loudspeaker Orchestra. At the same time, illustrations by António Cadete from the Manual Ilustrado de Espécies da Flora Portuguesa (1991) and other paintings will be projected.

On June 28, at the National Music Museum in Mafra, pianist Lawrence Axelrod will perform the series of five Pequenas Peças for piano, composed in 2007 by composer Diogo Alvim (published by MIC.PT). ‘These pieces are little exercises’ says Diogo Alvim in the programme notes. He explains: ‘They stem from ideas that are, so to speak, merely presented and not developed. They play with rhythmic patterns and the resonances of the piano, which is an element as important as the attacks. They require a different way of listening, drawing on Bartók’s Mikrokosmos and Kurtág’s Játékok.’ At this recital, entitled Queer Piano, Lawrence Axelrod seeks to highlight works rarely performed in standard concert programmes, offering a journey through the repertoire of composers from the LGBTQIA+ community — from the sensitivity of Jennifer Higdon’s Notes of Gratitude, to the energy of Bamboleio by Alexandre Delgado, and the rhythmic force of Aaron Copland’s El Salón México.

The work for guitar duo Modos de ver, by Fernando C. Lapa (a composer published by MIC.PT), will be performed by the Euterpe Guitar Duo on June 12 at the Casa da Música Jorge Peixinho in Montijo. At this concert, the duo, comprising guitarists Pedro Lopes Baptista and Titus Isfan, will also perform works by Ana Seara, Gonçalo d’Alcântara Lourenço, João Pimentel, José Mesquita Lopes (also published by MIC.PT), José Peixoto and Luís Lopo. Another work by Fernando C. Lapa, ao longe as vozes – homenageando Carlos Paredes, is part of the performance Canções & Palavras, which marks the centenary of Carlos Paredes’ birth. The performance, which blends arrangements and compositions by artists influenced by or who influenced Paredes, will feature the Trio Despertar — Ângelo Santos, clarinet; Eduardo Baltar Soares, Portuguese guitar; and Augustin Lassalle, classical guitar; and will take place at the closing of the exhibition Tradisom – trinta anos de edições, on the 10th, at Ponto C, in Penafiel.

This month, two works by composer João Pedro Oliveira (published by MIC.PT) will be performed in concert. The first, Bass on Fire (2020), for double bass, electronics and video, will be performed by Sara Barbosa as part of the música contemporânea u.minho @ gnration concert on the 9th in Braga. Another João Pedro Oliveira’s work to be presented this month is Revolution Pop, from 2024, for ensemble with soprano, commissioned by Síntese – Contemporary Music Group. ‘When composing a work about events that took place 50 years ago, I reflected on memories I have of that time’, the composer remarks, adding that the work references the rock bands Yes and Area, the music of Juan Manuel Serrat and, naturally, José Afonso. The concert featuring Revolution Pop, with Síntese conducted by Diogo Costa, will take place on June 12 in Guarda.

From the beginning of June, Luís Neto da Costa’s new album, entitled Last Chamber Works, will be available on various digital platforms. The album, released during the ESML’s Composition Week 2026, includes recordings of six works by this composer, published by MIC.PT: Città filigrana (2024) performed by Ensemble Suono Giallo; Painting on a wooden canvas of resonances (2024) by the Sond’Ar-te Duo with Vítor Vieira (violin) and Filipe Quaresma (cello); Los herejes de la diócesis de Aureliano (2024) performed by the Aleph Guitar Quartet; Illustrate Internal Clouds (2021) by the ensemble ars ad hoc; Unleashing Internal Clouds (2024) by Ensemble Recherche; and Punge (2025) performed by Vertixe Sonora. The pieces on this album explore a variety of styles, techniques and materials recently worked on by Luís Neto da Costa, notably the influence of ambient music, soft noises, subtle microtonal melodies, the alternation between chords with harmonics and distortion/saturation, as well as the influence of punk.

The children’s and young people’s opera Coro dos Pequenos Cidadãos (2021), by composer Mariana Vieira (published by MIC. PT), will be performed on June 5 at the Casa Municipal da Cultura in Seia, as part of the Community Electroacoustic Performance project, an initiative of Projecto DME that seeks to bridge the gap between art and therapy, promoting interpersonal empathy and encouraging artistic participation in an accessible and inclusive way, through the creation of a collective work. The concert is the result of several months of work led by teachers Adriana Neves and Ana Catarina Costa, from the Collegium Musicum – Seia Music Conservatory, with residents of the Casa de Santa Isabel and students from the Seia Music Conservatory. Also this month, more precisely on the 14th, at the Serralves Auditorium in Porto, the ensemble ars ad hoc will premiere Mariana Vieira new work, residual objects #1 – 1.ª parte, for flute, clarinet, violin, cello and piano. Written in 2008 by the composer Miguel Azguime (published by MIC.PT), the work Le Feu Qui Dort will be performed by the Miso String Quartet as part of two concerts within the Music Through Time series, occurring in June in the municipality of Odemira. The first concert, on the 26th, will take place at the Church of Misericórdia in Odemira, and the second on the 27th at the Estação das Artes (Santa Clara/Sabóia). The Miso String Quartet, comprising Pedro Lopes (violin), César Nogueira (violin), Joana Cipriano (viola) and Luís André Ferreira (cello), is a recent group founded by Miso Music Portugal, born of the conviction that the string quartet remains a living lab for creation, thought and listening. In addition, Miguel Azguime’s viola-and-electronics piece, Dedans-Dehors (2018), appears on Trevor McTait’s new CD, FIFTY – fifty, released in the month of May. The same work is also included in the programme of the recital that violist Jorge Alves will give as part of the American Viola Society Festival, which will take place on June 4 at the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts in Harrisonburg (USA).

On June 19, the Calouste Gulbenkian Conservatory of Music in Braga will hold the release event of the new Artway Records’ album, Pequenas Histórias para Grandes Instrumentos, featuring children’s music by the composer Paulo Bastos (published by MIC.PT). Written between 2012 and 2016, Pequenas Histórias para Grandes Instrumentos comprises nine works for flute, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, guitar, harp, piano, violin and cello, which aim to address the scarcity of original music for young musicians. The release event will include a round-table session, as well as the presentation of the CD and the nine printed scores of Pequenas Histórias. The following day, June 20, at the Palatele Brancovenesti Cultural Centre in Mogosoaia, Romania, the Kla-Vier Duo will premiere a new work by Paulo Bastos for piano four hands, entitled (...) suave como pássaro, voando (2026). At this concert, From the Atlantic to the Carpathians, pianists Patrícia Ventura and Sónia Amaral will also perform works by António Victorino d’Almeida, Constantin Silvestri, György Kurtág and Hanna Kulenty.

Release of the ISCM World New Music Magazine 2025 • Portugal In Focus

Miso Music Portugal and the Portuguese Music Research and Information Centre (MIC.PT), in partnership with the Centre for Music Studies (CESEM), will publicly present the ISCM World New Music Magazine #31, 2025, an issue dedicated to Portugal, on June 19, at 6h00 p.m., in Auditorium 3 of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, which is hosting this release event.
Magnus Bunnskog is editor-in-chief of the World New Music Magazine, whose 31st issue features contributions from Ana Telles, Andreia Nogueira, António Ferreira, Cláudio de Pina, Filipa Magalhães, Frank J. Oteri, Glenda Keam, Jakub Szczypa, Manuel Pedro Ferreira, Miguel Azguime, Pedro Boléo and Pedro Prista. Financial support from the ISCM, the Gulbenkian Foundation and DGARTES  (Portuguese Arts Council) made the bilingual publication possible.
The World New Music Magazine #31 follows the first-ever holding of the ISCM World New Music Days in Portugal in 2025. Promoted by the International Society for Contemporary Music, this is one of the most important international encounters dedicated to contemporary musical creation, organised in Portugal by Miso Music Portugal/MIC.PT. By bringing together articles, testimonials, essays and reflections by composers, researchers, performers, programmers and cultural agents, this edition of the World New Music Magazine constitutes not only a multifaceted portrait of contemporary Portuguese musical creation, but also an opportunity to reflect on its place in the international context.
The release will feature a round table discussion moderated by Pedro Boléo, bringing together the participants and authors who contributed to the publication. Under the theme What is new in Portuguese music?, the debate seeks to foster a shared reflection on the transformations, challenges, continuities and driving forces currently shaping musical creation in Portugal. This gathering proposes a collective conversation on the present and future of Portuguese music, seeking to explore what is emerging as new within it: in languages, practices, contexts of production and circulation, and the relationships between creation, research, performance, technology, territory and listening.
With this publication and its release, Miso Music Portugal/MIC.PT, in partnership with CESEM, reaffirms its commitment to the documentation, promotion, research and internationalisation of Portuguese musical creation, contributing to a greater visibility of its key figures and to the deepening of critical thinking about the music of our time.

In March, the MIC.PT published on its YouTube Channel one new In the 1st Person Interview (in Portuguese) with the composer Eduardo Luís Patriarca. The musicologist and journalist Pedro Boléo conducted this interview recorded in 2022, in Porto, at the Higher School of Music and Performing Arts.
Presently the MIC.PT YouTube Channel contains 37 new interviews to composers residing in Portugal, realised since 2019; as well as eight interviews from the MIC.PT Archive, realised between 2003 and 2005.
The new interviews, conducted by Pedro Boléo, were filmed at the O’culto da Ajuda in Lisbon and realised in the context of the In the 1st Person cycle of the Music Today and Music of Invention and Research radio broadcasts, produced by the MIC.PT and Miso Music Portugal for the RTP Antena 2. They constitute a (re)visit to the creative universe of various composers published by the MIC.PT, following the Historical Interviews recorded by the MIC.PT 20 years ago. Today they are unique registers of the artistic evolution of each interviewed composer.
