Program Notes
I composed this work, Four Pieces to Flute and Clarinet, in 2004 as a micro-cycle of environments. The Prelude is a flute solo with the possibility of very free performance, sustained by the close play of intervals and the open beginning-middle-end structure. The 2nd movement is a short moment of nostalgia that I associate with Brazilian music of the 1950s; the 3rd one is where the musicians interact with the contrast between free and strict rhythm. The last piece is meditative-somewhat-Webernian and its role is that of a door: it does not close the music – it opens the silence.
