Wandering from clime to clime is a concert for accordion and chamber orchestra. The title is a quotation taken from The Odyssey in Alexander Pope's English translation (1725) and was chosen to reflect the journey that the music undertakes in trying to integrate an instrument often associated with popular music or dance - or even with the Paris Metro! - into the world of contemporary classical music.
There are four movements: the first three gradually become faster; after a solo cadenza, the last movement is the slowest and longest. The concerto is based on a single melodic idea which, with various transformations, provides the musical material for the entire work.
Wandering from clime to clime is dedicated to accordionist Gonçalo Pescada, who completed his doctorate on contemporary music for the accordion under the guidance of conductor Christopher Bochmann about ten years ago.
