Program Notes
It is a work built on traditional melodies from the Serra da Gardunha region, in a repertoire mainly centered on the village of Castelo Novo.
Designed and written to include the people from the village, it includes parts to be sung by popular choirs, as well as the use of some popular or unconventional instruments, especially percussion (in lands where adufes are kings).
Some texts from local testimonies were selected, about rites and songs involved in this piece, in order to be read or integrated during the songs.
The vocal and instrumental treatment written for the ensemble somehow amplifies and illuminates the meaning and ambience of the various songs and their varied character.
This amplification involves some elements of language and musical writing that point to an aesthetic more focused on the music of our time.
