The work Golfadas de Silêncio, for orchestra and chamber choir, is based on texts by Eugénio de Andrade (1923-2005). Five short poems are used; the title is a quote from another poem.
The work is divided into two parts: the first contains four of the five the poems and the second the fifth. The voices are used in various ways: sometimes they sing “normally”; sometimes they speak, thus increasing intelligibility; sometimes they produce isolated sounds, thus approaching the instrumental writing of the work.
The fourth poem, all sung, is a brief tribute to the composer Jorge Peixinho, an unavoidable figure in contemporary Portuguese music.
The last poem (“Deixei de ouvir o mar””) ends with the incomplete initial phrase, “deixei de ouvir......”, thus leading to a moment of solitude and final silence.
