Program Notes
This string trio was written as a 90th birthday present for my aunt, who shares the same initials as me (CCB). The opening figure is a musical realization of the notes suggested by these letters (in the old tradition of B-A-C-H or ABEGG or DSCH etc.).
The work is based on three types of musical material: A (Vivo) is lively and reasonably contrapuntal; B (Lento) is more melodic, with other instruments “accompanying”; C (Moderato) is more homophonic. Formally, the piece follows a circular sequence A-B-C-A-B-C-A-B-C-A. However, the wholly dissimilar durations of each section largely hide this triangular alternation and create a formal dynamic for the whole work.
Each section uses a different set of characteristic intervals: these give each section a different harmonic and melodic flavour.
