Program Notes
I call Lubra the result of an intense mix between what is Luso and Brazilian, when a third factor is born with its own identity or style. It's an aesthetic/expressive ideal that I try to portray musically, in forms with different degrees and types of blend. Lubramix V is made up of two movements with different proposals - 'Fantasia Boi Bumbá' has a dense, abstract texture, idiomatic of the string quartet and punctuated with melodic fragments evocative of Brazilian folklore; 'Dança das Fidalgas' has an atmosphere of levity and celebration, approaches the Renaissance modality and quotes fragments of Portuguese folk music. Both were constructed with formal intentions that bring together free, modal sonorities in a flow close to improvisation.
