In the 5th movement of this work, the composer quotes the accompaniment of Stravinsky's Soldier's Tale and in the 12th movement he quotes an excerpt from the last movement of Mendelssohn's Octect and also an excerpt from Smetana's Bartered Bride overture. The theme and variations of the 11th movement were taken from the "Lament" of the 1st Suite for Cello by Benjamin Britten. This piece can be played partially or as a whole, as long as the 1st and 12th movements are kept at the beginning and at the end, respectively, and as long as at least 3 movements (quick-slow-quick) are played. Besides this rule, as obvious, any movement can be played as an individual piece.
