Distinguished with an Honorary Mention in the Composition Prize ESMAE / Casa da Música, Scriptum was written in the summer of 2002, after my conclusion of the first year of the Composition Course in Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa.
Scriptum tries to synthesize two pieces I wrote before. The first movement, ante-scriptum, uses the embryonic material of Personalities for solo clarinet, used here in a very particular way, but maintaining the implicit harmonic field. The second movement, scriptum, is constructed juxtaposing gestures from 7 Pictures for flute and piano, where the material used in the duo is clearly maintained. The last movement, post-scriptum, clearly influenced by the Piano Etude Fanfares by Ligeti, constitutes a development of a little melodic fragment of the piece 7 Pictures. In spite of the fact that at the moment I am not so concerned with this kind of sonority, the idea of the synthesis of musical material and its recurrent use in different pieces, has been one of the solutions I have found to give unity to my work.
