Portuguese clarinetist, conductor and composer, Luís Carvalho is one of the most versatile musicians of his generation. Having performed several concerts and recitals all over Europe as well as North Africa, Middle East and Asia, Mr. Carvalho often premieres his own pieces and others by Portuguese and foreign contemporary composers. Mr. Carvalho studied composition in Porto with Fernando Lapa and Analysis and Musical Aesthetics with Miguel Ribeiro Pereira, having also attended workshops and lectures by such renowned composers as Luis de Pablo (Spain) and Magnus Lindberg (Finland). A prizewinner at several competitions, the ones obtained at the 4th International Composition Competition of Póvoa de Varzim (2009) for his orchestral work Metamorphoses ... homage to M. C. Escher, or the Authors Prize 2012 nomination (by the Portuguese Authors Society - SPA) for his work Nise Lacrimosa, also for orchestra, should be highlighted. Mr. Carvalho has received commissions from Cistermúsica-International Music Festival of Alcobaça, the Portuguese Symphony Band, the horn quartet Trompas Lusas, and such renowned soloists as Sérgio Carolino (tuba), Abel Pereira (horn), Victor Pereira (clarinet) or Henrique Portovedo (saxophone). His music, mostly published by AvA-editions, has been played by important orchestras and groups, as well as distinguished soloists, and some of his pieces are featured in CD’s by labels NUMÉRICA and AFINAUDIO. A teacher at the faculty of the Aveiro University, Mr. Carvalho is currently preparing a doctoral thesis devoted to Gustav Mahler’s 10th Symphony in F# major.
