This work was composed at the request of the Harpist Andreia Marques, and for me it was an honor and a challenge: the proposal to recover some of the harp material from a previous work, Jet Lag for septet, transforming it into autonomous, solo music. Andreia scheduled the premiere for the International Harp Festival, 2010, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sine die postponed due to illness and early death of this harpist, who did so much for teaching and contemporary music in Portugal – this modest work is dedicated to her, with nostalgia and affection.

Program Notes
Textures is the generic title I have been giving to the writing style, which I use as an informal proposal – the musical surface and the governance of an emotional environment, almost exclusive; the construction elements of the work. The subtitles refer to an expressive paradigm, the dominant feeling and sensations which draw me into that form of expression. Texture in waves develops from a fragment that turns into melodic curves, ornamental designs or large metric cycles. And from the stabilising effect on different registers contrasting with the “wave” movement. Texture with breath wire has a clear shape, but it also has a strong theatrical component in the contrast between the “blowing wire” and the sound of the percussed wood. In my sensibility, the sound of the harp creates the magic – almost-a-feeling that music is the sound made of time, which is pure memory - and it is vague and perfect, and distant.
