Program Notes
The work Glosas was written in 2023 at the request of saxophonist Carlos Canhoto to be premiered at the Festival Internacional de Saxofones de Palmela (FISP). And it was actually premiered on July 12 at the Igreja de S.Tiago in Castelo de Palmela, by Carlos Canhoto and the Ensemble MPMP, directed by Jan Wierzba, at a FISP concert.
The work has a single movement and alternates string-only sections with longer soloist sections. With the exception of a simple introductory gesture, the first section is tutti. The first "Glosa" with a soloist follows, in a slightly faster tempo, with several “cadential” moments in which the soloist's rhythm is much freer. The second tutti follows and then the second "Glosa”, now slower and lyrical; in the middle of this section, the soloist, taking advantage of the A note common to several instruments, changes instruments (from alto to soprano) and continues with the lyricism a little more in the treble and with another timbre. Then, the music enters in the third tutti; and thus enters the last intervention (glosa) of the soloist, this time keeping the same tempo of the previous tutti. A certain climax is reached before the entry of the last tutti. But here the scheme deviates a little from its own initial plan, that is, the soloist continues to play during this last tutti. And the work ends with a final gesture closely related to the initial design of the piece.
