Program Notes
Almeida Garrett's poem 'Gozo e Dor' (Fallen Leaves, 1853) is transformed into a narrative about an archetype of the human condition: Deligere or Choice. The person who feels pain from loving and being loved so much always has a choice to make: to stop or to continue. A love so intense, so strong, that it transcends Kant's reason. Two lovers whose passion is so excessive that it conditions Sartre's free will. Consorts on a penitent's journey, shackled by their choices. Deligere is a mini-opera about decision theory and the delirium of passion inspired by the aesthetics of Adam’s Passion by Arvo Pärt and Robert Wilson.
