YOUNG COMPOSERS OF THE 1980's IN FOCUS ON MIC.PT IN MARCH
Following the February editions of the Música Hoje (Music Today) radio broadcast, in March the In Focus section is dedicated to nine young Portuguese composers, Sofia Sousa Rocha (1986), Daniel Martinho (1985), Ângela da Ponte (1984), Hugo Ribeiro (1983), Filipe Lopes (1981), Rui Penha (1981), Jonas Runa (1981), Nuno Peixoto de Pinho (1980) and Duarte Dinis Silva (1980). Born in the 1980's, these young music authors have scores published online by the Portuguese Music Research & Information Centre.

Putting side by side these nine young composers with emerging careers on the Portuguese music panorama, we trace some paths for the future of music creation in Portugal, stimulating the reflection on the aesthetic implications of Portuguese new music, as well as on the sociopolitical involvement in supporting its creation. Multiplicity, creative freedom, new technologies, sound phenomenons, intertextuality, … these are some of the expressions, which are associated to new music. There are many original examples of these trends, which can be found in the creation of Portuguese young composers, yet which are not adequately considered when it comes to music journalism, critique, academical studies and financial support.

Who are these young Portuguese composer? How do they work and what paths do they follow? What aesthetic currents can be distinguished in their work? In March visit the MIC.PT In Focus section dedicated to young Portuguese composers born in the 1980's, and with scores published by the MIC.PT.

The first number will be dedicated to the theme of Vienna XX/XXI and its authors include Madalena Soveral, Marie Luise Maintz, Sergio Bové and Christian Scheib, who approach the work of such composers as Alban Berg, Peter Ablinger and Beat Furrer. The 1st issue of the journal will take place on March 17 at the Culturgest, with the participation of Beat Furrer, who will be debating on the current state of music with the project’s coordinators, Pedro Berardinelli and Diana Ferreira.
