Filipe Pires in focus on mic.pt in july
Filipe Pires, one of the most illustrious composers in Portugal and a key figure in the History of Portuguese Contemporary Music, celebrates this year his 80th anniversary. As if genetically destined for music, he revealed himself early as a pianist and composer, having asserted the freedom in resorting to a variety of styles, from his first impressionist, neoclassical and atonal passions, to electroacoustic music and open forms, being one of the pioneers in Portugal of the two latter approaches.

Together with composition and performance he has been exercising an intense pedagogical activity, music critique, realization of courses, conferences, having also written various didactic, biographical and analytical works on Portuguese music and musicians. His activity as head of some of the most important Portuguese music institutions is another trait of his endeavour in the affirmation and dissemination of art music.
As composer, Filipe Pires doesn’t feel “prisoner of any tendency, technique or aesthetics”, having acknowledged that, “the particular problems of every work determine specific morphological and syntactical choices”; and in this sense he has been exploring tonality, modalism, chromaticism, atonality, dodecaphony, integral serialism, mosaicism, aleatoricism, music theatre, minimalism, as well as electroacoustic music.

In July visit the MIC.PT In Focus section dedicated to the work of Filipe Pires.
