Bruno Gabirro attended the Academia de Amadores de Música in Lisbon, where he studied Violin with Gareguin Aroutiounian. At the same school he studied Viola with Barbara Friedhoff and Composition Analysis and Techniques with Eurico Carrapatoso. He also studied Computer Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon. In 2006 he graduated from the Composition Course at the Lisbon Superior School of Music and in 2008 he made his Master’s Degree at the Royal Academy of Music in London where he had the opportunity to work with Peter Maxwell Davies. Between 2003 and 2010 he regularly worked with Emmanuel Nunes in the framework of the Composition Seminars at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Bruno Gabirro’s music has been presented in diverse countries and festivals, by groups and orchestras such as the Gulbenkian Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Orchestrutopica,Sond’Ar-te Electric Ensemble, Royal Academy Soloists and Musica Vitae Kammarorkestern. He was distinguished with diverse awards and research scholarships by Casa da Música in Porto, Royal Television Society and Royal Academy of Music. In 2008 Bruno Gabirro received the Eric Coates Prize for Composition for his work Rebel (Chaos) for string orchestra.

In 2014 he received a scholarship by the Secretaria Geral Ibero-Americana and Académie de France à Madrid, in the context of which he realized an artistic residency at the Casa de Velázquez in Madrid. There he developed a research and composition project, Para uma verdadeira integração do espaço como parâmetro sonoro musical (For a true integration of space as musical and sound parameter). Additionally, on various occassions, Bruno Gabirro was composer-resident at the Lab for Electroacoustic Creation by Miso Music Portugal. He was also scholarship holder of the FCT – Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences, organic unit of the Universidade NOVA in Lisbon, in the framework of the PhD thesis with Paulo de Assis as supervisor. He studies the perforance on Adufe (a traditional square tambourine of Moorish origin) with Rui Silva.

In his music, which encompasses compositions for the most varied instrumental sets, from solo pieces to orchestral music, Bruno Gabirro valorizes above all the idea of discourse as “the active reason and vital energy that animates everything”, also giving particular attention to means such as silence and live electronic sound processing.
