Emanuel Marcelino was born in Lisbon in 1975. He started his musical studies at the Gregorian Institute of Lisbon, where he studied from 1988 to 1993. In 1996 he earned his BA at the Lisbon Superior School of Music, studying composition with António Pinho Vargas and Christopher Bochmann. In 1999, he concluded in France the Maîtrise degree at the Paris 8 University, under Antoine Bonnet’s supervision. Between 1993 and 1998 he attended composition seminars by Emmanuel Nunes, at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, as well as seminars abroad with other composers such as Franco Donatoni or Gérard Grisey. In Portugal, Emanuel Marcelino taught musical analysis, acoustics and aural training, from conservatory to university, between 1996 and 2004. Active as a composer since 1994, one of his works was premiered by the OrchestrUtopica at the Estoril Music Festival in 2005.
