 Born in Lisbon, Portugal, Andreia Pinto Correia is currently pursuing a composition doctoral degree at the New England Conservatory, in Boston, studying with Michael Gandolfi. She received her Master of Music degree with Academic Honors in Jazz Composition as a student of Bob Brookmeyer, and a double degree in Film Scoring and Jazz Composition, also with Academic Honors, from the Berklee College of Music. Appointed as the 2010 Young Commissioned Composer by the Dinosaur Annex Music Ensemble for the YCF (Boston), Miss Pinto-Correia holds commissions from the Tanglewood Music Center (to be premiered in 2010), European Community Presidency, OrchestrUtópica, Drumming GP, Avian Music Contemporary Ensemble (NY), Antena 2/RTP (Portugal's National Broadcast), two commissions by tuba virtuosos Sérgio Carolino (Soloist Oporto National Orchestra) and Anne Jelle Visser (Soloist Opera of Zurich), Machina Mundi Ensemble, percussionist Miquel Bernat, Duo Musagete, percussionist Jeffrey Davis, the AR Ensemble, the Festival do Teatro S. Luíz, Câmara Municipal da Trofa, and the Orquestra de Jazz de Matosinhos, to name a few. Her Concerto for Two Tubas (Adamastor) has been recently announced as a finalist for the 2010 Harvey G. Phillips Award for Excellence in Composition. Other recent awards include a 2010-11 Valparaiso Foundation Composer Residency (Spain), a 2009 Tanglewood Music Center Fellowship, a 2009 National Orchestral Composition Discovery Network/Memphis Symphony Orchestra Fellowship, a 2009 Honorable Mention in ACO Readings, a 2009 Honorable Mention in Minnesota Symphony Orchestra Readings, the 2009 NEC Contemporary Ensemble Composition Award, the 2009 Berta C. and Edward Rose Scholarship, the 2008 Toru Takemitsu Award by the Japan Society, a 2008 Composers Conference Fellowship, a 2008 Orquestra do Algarve Young Composer Fellowship, the 2008 NEC Contemporary Ensemble Composition Award, a 2007/2009 Luso-American Foundation for the Development Scholarship, several NEC Merit Awards and ASCAPLUS Awards. Collaborations include the New Fromm Players at Tanglewood, the Shakespeare & Company (TMC Fellowship/Lennox), and tuba BSO soloist Mike Roylance (TMC Fellowship), as well as conductors Stephan Asbury (TMC Fellowship), David Loebel (Memphis Symphony Readings Fellowship), Mihhail Gerts (OrchestrUtópica Commission/Estonia), John Page, Donald Palma (NEC Readings), and Cesario Evora (Orquestra do Algarve Readings). Miss Pinto-Correia is a recipient of several institutions including the New England Conservatory, Luso-American Foundation for the Development, Beneficent Society, Berklee College of Music and the Berklee College of Music Alumni Grant, ASCAP, BMI Jazz Composers Workshop (NY), and an Arstist-in-Residence at the Sacatar Foundation (Brazil, 2006-7). Miss Pinto-Correia started her musical studies in her native country at the Academia de Amadores de Música and at the Escola Luis Villas-Boas (Hot Clube de Portugal), in Lisbon. Originally a performer, she dedicated herself to composition in 2002, after being unable to continue her career as a soloist due to an accident. She started her composition career by conducting exclusively her own works with her Jazz Orchestra both in the USA and Portugal. She also collaborated with Cape Verdean artists Vasco Martins, legendary batucadeira Nacia Gomi and Mário Lúcio as the musical director of the Commemorations of the 30 years of that country. Her works have been performed in major halls across Europe, Africa and the USA such as the Seiiji Ozawa Hall (Tanglewood, Lennox) Muziekgebouw (Amsterdam), Zurich University for the Arts, Lucern Festival, Jordan Hall (Boston), Berklee Performance Center (Boston), Centro Cultural do Mindelo (Cape Verd), Casa da Música (Oporto), Centro Cultural de Belém (Lisboa), Centro Cultural Vilar Flór (Guimarães), Auditório de Espinho, Teatro das Figuras (Faro), and Teatro Gil Vicente (Coimbra). She has been exclusively devoted to write 'concert' music since the year of 2007. Her music combines both the influences of her native country and the techniques of contemporary music.
