Purity 1 was born from the rereading of Anne Frank’s diary and the impact which this text has had during the various years of my research on the connection between spoken word, mixed and instrumental music.
Anne Frank’s text doesn’t have literary ambitions. It describes, quite genuinely and purely, the events of the war and the impact which their evolution had on her family and circle of friends. From an affective and emotional point of view, Anne Frank approaches war with extreme semantic purity. In this context, my music accompanies the author’s registers on her affections, emotions and drama growing until the final period in her life, with processes elaborated from extremely pure elements (sinusoids, harmonic sounds of the string and wind instruments). From a musical point of view, the composition is structured as a “collage” of previously composed elements. These elements refer to different colours and consequently to different emotional states. Their organisation/ composition is a paraphrase of previously chosen passages from Anne Frank’s text. The initial musical text has been conceived for a 5-instrument ensemble. After writing the instrumental part, the instruments were orchestrated with electroacoustic sequences, with the aim to create a phenomenological relation between the sonic intuition and its possible meanings.
