Program Notes
The work Sonho (Dream) starts from an poem excerpt from Fernando Pessoa’s Message (Second Part – Portuguese Sea, II Horizon): The dream consists in seeing the invisible shapes
Of the hazy distance, and, with perceptible
Movements of hope and will,
Search out in the cold line of the horizon
The tree, the beach, the flower, the bird, the spring –
The well deserved kisses of Truth.
Composed for flute, clarinet, violin, violoncello, piano, narrator, tape and live electronics, Sonho seeks to musically represent this stanza in a double perspective: as an integral part of Pessoa’s work and as an isolated stanza, which subsists by itself.
Structurally, the work consists of three main sections, each with a clearly defined character between them. The first translates into a more contemplative and static soundscape. The central section develops gradually from the previous regarding the harmonic density, dynamic and instruments range. The last section is the resolution of the whole work – The well deserved kisses of Truth.
