The Five Short Piano Pieces were originally conceived through the influence of Arnold Schönberg. However, as the work progressed piece-by-piece, the composer eventually
abandoned his original idea, keeping only the first and
last pieces under Schönberg’s influence. He explains: “I
wished to compose Five Short Piano Pieces in a way that each one would have its own character, and, at the same time depend on the others….”
1. A_zul (Blue) – composed not with a dodecaphonic series, but rather with different micromodes that present an interesting melodic and harmonic result. It is a Lento.
2. A_llegro – this fast appropriately follows the first slow one.
3. A_norte (To the north).
4. A_sul (To the south).
5. A_final – composed second, but placed last in the series.
