Program Notes
Everything is mystery, everything is transcendent
In its enormous complexity:
An exterior and visioned reasoning,
A peaceful mysteriousness, ––
Inner silence full of sound.
....................................
The cold night, the passing by of the wind,
Are shadows of hands, whose gestures are
The prime illusion of this illusion.
("First Faust", Fernando Pessoa)
Ombres Croisées (1990/99) for 8-track tape and 8 loudspeakers is based on synthesis sounds produced by 2 synthesizers Yamaha TX802, controlled by one computer Atari ST1040. On both synthesizers the 2 x 8 = 16 independent outputs were used, which converged afterwards in 8 punctual loudspeakers disposed around the audience.
This piece was originally conceived to be performed live - in real time. At the concert the computer not only "played" the electronic score but also controlled in real time the timbre transformations and the changes of the micro tunings.
One of the main aspects developed in this piece consists in the structural identity-relationships between the forms of the rhythmical entities, of the construction of timbres, of the organization of the different micro tunings, and of the spatial function of the 8 diffusion points (loudspeakers) placed around the audience.
