At the origin of this piece are three others written by me:
-
MSTRG for a percussionist (2008-2009, rev. 2010-2014)
-
Mostrengo-Interlude for broadcast system 5.1 (2008)
-
SMPG for six percussionists (2005-2008, rev. 2009)
Mostrengo-Interlude and
MSTRG both use Pessoa's poem
O Mostrengo (from the book
Mensagem).
The first piece contrasts two very different readings of the poem (by actors João Villaret and Luís Miguel Cintra); the second follows the sequence of the poem's verses by assigning to the different characters (narrator, monster and man at the helm) sounds produced by different materials (wood, metal and fur, respectively), as well as certain phonemes to certain instruments.
MSTRG-TRLD follows the structure of the readings in
Mostrengo-Interlude, using the musical material of
MSTRG, which is then performed twice. Each percussionist, with the exception of the percussionist in the middle, plays individually the material corresponding to the verses of one of the three characters (in Mostrengo, both the structure of the readings and the material were used more freely). The instruments that generally accompany them correspond to those of the character referred to (for example, when the narrator refers to the man at the helm, the accompaniment is provided by furs). Some of the material and ideas for the accompaniments come from
SMPG (this piece is an attempt to transcribe my piece
Shaking Mendeleev in the Presence of a Guitar for the 5.1 broadcast system [2004-2005], which in turn was used in part in em>Mostrengo-Interlude to dialogue with and comment on the readings and to highlight the moments of tension in the poem).
