Program Notes
Carolina's Book of Spells, contains seven pieces inspired by folk prayers and rituals by Nuno Lobo's grandmother. Growing up in a remote village in central Portugal, she held onto these traditions, which were deeply rooted in the Portuguese Catholic Church. These rituals, used to stop rain, cure illnesses, or find missing items, often substituted scientific knowledge in areas with limited resources. The lyrics were crafted from these very "spells," serving not only to honor these enigmatic texts but also to explore the inherent musical qualities found within them.
