Túmulo de Sophia is a tribute to the work and person of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. A woman washes the dishes, in silence, "as if she were washing her soul". The piece begins in this atmosphere: in the Dies Irae of the oboes, in the silence that hangs "like an outstretched thirst". A cry is heard. Here, the character is contrasting. This is a silence that cries out "against the walls, against the stones, against the shadow of the night". Then the silence returns. This is not a Day of Wrath, but of peace. In Sophia's Tomb everyone can rest.
